[page 86] I am the third son of Reynolds and Thirza Cahoon. My father is the son of William Cahoon who is the son of William Cahoon, Senior, who was a descendent of one of three brothers who came to this country from Scotland. . My mother was a daughter of Daniel Stiles, who was the son of John Stiles. I was born on the 7th of April, eighteen hundred twenty two [1822], at Harpersfield, Ohio. I was baptized by William McLelland [McLellin] in the town of Kirtland, Ohio, when about nine years old. I am now 22 years old. Have been in the midst of the Church for 13 years and, although young, have been somewhat familiar with the history of the Church and personally acquainted with the heads of the Church and have been since I became a member and do know them to be virtuous and honorable men, both from precept and example and would count it an honor to die by their sides or in their defense, and desire to be [an] instrument in the hand of God to do some good work that shall perpetrate my name with the faithful ones. I have at all times felt an interest in the work and felt interested and engaged in what our father was engaged in for the Church, have passed in common with the Church through most of the sorrows and distresses, trouble, privations, persecutions and afflictions, and desire to participate and share in their blessings.

Daniel Stiles Cahoon. Recorded by B. [Bradford] W. Elliott, August 25, 1845, at Nauvoo, the City of Joseph.
